The Hessische Hausstiftung is a family foundation whose task is to maintain the cultural assets assembled by the Hessian dynasty of princes over the course of many centuries. By doing so, the legacy of the landgraves of Hesse-Kassel and Hesse-Darmstadt and the electors and grand dukes of Hesse may be preserved.
The Hessische Hausstiftung was established in 1928 during the Weimar Republic. The first democratic German state required the dissolution of princely private property. By forming a foundation, a nationalization of the Hessian princely house's cultural assets could be prevented. Thus these objects of artistic, scientific, or historical importance remained preserved in their historical context and accessible to posterity.
The Hessische Hausstiftung was given the important task to preserve and care for its cultural assets and, in particular, those in the museum that Landgrave Philipp von Hessen instituted in Schloss Fasanerie in 1951. For the expenditures necessary to preserve the art collections, the Hessian family included its own property into the foundation after World War II. Today the Hessische Hausstiftung comprises, in addition to Schloss Fasanerie, the Schlosshotel in Kronberg and the Hotel Hessischer Hof in Frankfurt, the Estate PRINZ VON HESSEN in the Rheingau, and farming property in Schleswig-Holstein with one of the eldest Trakehner Studs (Gut Panker). With this additional support, the family can secure the fulfillment of the foundation's public purpose.
